IE9:  Open Homepage in New Tab
I'm not exactly sure where to ask this question so i'm putting it in this forum category. Correct me if i'm wrong. Question: When opening a link on my desktop, and then clicking to open a new tab, rather than open my homepage (ie. bing.com) it duplicates the link that i had opened from my desktop. How do i prevent this? I want all new tabs to open bing.com. I notice that the back/forward buttons have changed color when i open a link from my desktop or favorites, from blue, to some other random color. I hate this feature. haha

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab, close to the bottom, is a "Tabs" category. Click on the Settings button. Uncheck "Open only the first home page when Internet Explorer starts." Below that is a dropdown for "When a new tab is opened, open:". Assuming that Bing is your home page, select "Your first home page" from that dropdown to have each tab open to Bing. SC Tom

Nope, that did not work. I did the following exactly: Uncheck "open only the first home page when internet explorer starts" choose "your first homepage", in dropdown. When i open a link from either my desktop or favorites, when i click to open a new tab, it duplicates the tab instead of opening www.bing.com

Eggplants, you need to make sure that bing.com is the first entry in your home page list, which you can find on the first tab (general) of internet options. (Tools>Internet Options) Then, as SC Tom pointed out - you should have 'your first home page' set to open under the tab setting option 'when a new tab is opened, open:' ...

yes, www.bing.com is set as my homepage under the General Settings of Internet Options. Consider this situation: When i open Internet Explorer from the Start Menu, tabs work correctly. When i open a link on the desktop(shortcut url), it opens a new IE9 window. Tabs in this new window open using the Shortcut URL and not my homepage. When i check my Internet Options settings, they match the settings you mentioned.

I have tried this on another computer running IE8 and it works correctly with the settings you have suggested, but not on my Windows 7, 32bit, running IE9.

It works as it should on my Win7 IE9 machine and my WinXP IE8 one (both are 32-bit), so I don't think the version of IE has anything to do with it. Looks like you may have a problem with your IE9. If you want, you can reset it to default by going to the Advanced tab in Internet Options and clicking on the Reset... button near the bottom right of the window. That will bring it back to default settings, letting you re-set all your options again. SC Tom
